The Dany Heatley trade to the Edmonton Oilers is allegedly off, according to Sun Media Bruce Garrioch. He wouldn’t waive his no trade to make this happen.

Wow. I’m in shock. What’s next? Will he really suit up for the Senators?

Lots of stories hitting the Web in the past hour noting that the Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators have agreed on a trade that would ship Dany Heatley to the Oilers for center Andrew Cogliano, winger Dustin Penner and defenseman Ladislav Smid. Apparently, the only thing not making this official is that Heatley needs to waive his no-trade clause.

Hard to believe the Senators pulled off a trade before paying Heatley his$4 million bonus tomorrow. It also appeared that the New York Rangers were positioning themselves for a move. Too late now, though.

What does everybody think of this trade, if true?

The Minnesota Wild could be interesting in bringing in Mikko Koivu’s big brother, former Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu, for next season. The elder Koivu is a free agent tomorrow. Would be preetty neat to see them on the same team, though a bit odd for Saku to not be wearing a Habs sweater.

A story  just posted by The Vancouver Sun says Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis traveled to Sweden to present the team’s latest offer to Daniel and Henrik Sedin in person. However, as far as I can tell, no deal has been struck. In the article, Henrik is quoted as saying, “We have to wait and see what happens. We have told them what we want, but we don’t agree on all the details.”

Lots of reports, like this one from NESN, say that the Montreal Canadiens will be after the Sedin twins should they hit the open market tomorrow. There’s also significant talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs being interested (see here, for example).

According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Edmonton Oilers are the likely leaders in terms of landing Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley. His sources say that the New York Rangers, despite moving out Scott Gomez’s big contract, aren’t in the sweepstakes as of tonight.

Winger Jere Lehtinen has re-signed with the Dallas Stars. I thought he could have been a nice, affordable depth pick up for many teams. The terms, according to the article linked here, are $1.5 million, plus $1 million in incentives.

Scratch defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from NHL free agent shopping lists: The Calgary Flames have signed him to a multiyear agreement. This move surely changes the outlook and plans for many teams heading into tomorrow’s frenzy, don’t you think? I’m anxious to find out the terms of the deal.

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired center Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenseman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defensemen Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko. Find details of the trade here.

Personally, I find it hard to believe a team was willing to take on Gomez’s $7.35 million cap hit. Guess this also kills the Lecavalier-to-Montreal rumors. What do you think?

The Ottawa Citizen’s James Gordon wonders if a Dany Heatley-for-Dion Phaneuf swap would make sense for the Ottawa Senators and Calgary Flames.

Who would you rather have: A potential 50-goal scorer or a potential Norris Trophy-winning defenseman? Would probably depend on your team’s other needs. If Calgary is able to lock in Jay Bouwmeester, I could see this helping them out big time.
