The off-season remains in a lull. Here are a few recent rumor stories circulating among reporters:

  • Brendan Shanahan looks like he’s going to sign with either the New Jersey Devils or New York Rangers. Read about it by clicking here.
  • According to the Dallas Morning News, defenseman Sergei Zubov isn’t likely to return to the Dallas Stars.
  • Alex Tanguay’s agent confirms that the Florida Panthers are one of about six teams looking to sign the UFA winger. Read the Florida Sun Sentinel article by clicking here. According to the article, other teams that could be in the mix include the Coyotes, Oilers, Islanders, Senators and Stars.

Mixed signals are coming out of Ottawa in regards to Dany Heatley’s future. In this case, the general manager is saying one thing and the owner another.

The Edmonton Journal’s Dan Barnes says the Edmonton Oilers haven’t given up on landing Ottawa Senator Dany Heatley via trade. However, Barnes notes that Heatley likely won’t waive his to-trade clause until he is presented with at least two additional potential trade destinations from which to pick. Ottawa GM Bryan Murray says there are two other teams with serious interest, but no other details are available. Check out the article by clicking here.

However, in a Sun Media report the Senators’ owner says the deal to send Heatley to the Oilers is still on the table, “but only for so long and after that his only option is to report to training camp.” Click here to read more.

The Columbus Dispatch’s Bob Hunter sees the San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers as possible trade partners for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are pursuing a puck-moving defenseman. Read the column by clicking here.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie explores the fallout of the Dany Heatley near-trade between Edmonton and Ottawa. Interesting stuff, and sure to get ugly in the coming days if not longer.

Now TSN is reporting that Dany Heatley will not make his decision tonight. Just 12 minutes until the Senators are on the hook for his $4 million bonus. Daren Millard is reporting the same thing.

Crazy. I’ll continue to monitor for the next 30 minutes or so to see if this changes.

Sportsnet’s Daren Millar just tweeted this regarding Dany Heatley’s meeting with the Oilers brass: the meeting is over.. heatley discussing with family… decision any minute…”

This all could be over soon — well, at least for now.

It’s baa-aack … well, maybe. The Dany Heatley-to-Edmonton Oilers deal may still happen, according to Sun Media’s Bruce Garrioch. The article says there are discussions planned for tonight, and Heatley has been talking to several people within the Oilers organization today.

Here’s a nice column that provides some thoughts and insights on the Dany Heatley almost-trade of last night. And here’s some additional information.

I’m still a bit shocked this morning. What a blow to Edmonton and Ottawa.

The Dany Heatley trade to the Edmonton Oilers is allegedly off, according to Sun Media Bruce Garrioch. He wouldn’t waive his no trade to make this happen.

Wow. I’m in shock. What’s next? Will he really suit up for the Senators?

Lots of stories hitting the Web in the past hour noting that the Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators have agreed on a trade that would ship Dany Heatley to the Oilers for center Andrew Cogliano, winger Dustin Penner and defenseman Ladislav Smid. Apparently, the only thing not making this official is that Heatley needs to waive his no-trade clause.

Hard to believe the Senators pulled off a trade before paying Heatley his$4 million bonus tomorrow. It also appeared that the New York Rangers were positioning themselves for a move. Too late now, though.

What does everybody think of this trade, if true?
