According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Edmonton Oilers are the likely leaders in terms of landing Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley. His sources say that the New York Rangers, despite moving out Scott Gomez’s big contract, aren’t in the sweepstakes as of tonight.

Lot’s of NHL news today. Here are a few recent highlights:

The Calgary Flames are meeting with Jay Bouwmeester and his agent today. In less than 48 hours he can talk to any team he wants to, so hard to see the logic behind rushing into a new contract.

Sun Media’ s Terry Jones believes the Flames traded for Bouwmeester’s rights, in part, to keep him out of Edmonton (J-Bo’s home town). Jones wonders why the Oilers haven’t shown much interest. He feels that J-Bo would put Edmonton over the top, and also allow them to make moves for a center.

Lots’ of news about Dany Heatley today.

Sun Media reports that the Ottawa Senators are asking for two players plus a draft pick (likely a first-rounder) in exchange for Heatley. The team would also like to make the deal before July 1, when Heatley is due a $4 million signing bonus. The article notes that the Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars are leading the Heatley sweepstakes, though the St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers also are interested.

Another Sun Media report looks at some of the players who could be involved in discussions, ranging from Kings winger Alexander Frolov and defenceman Jack Johnson to Wild center James Sheppard, defenseman Tyler Cuma and winger Cal Clutterbuck.

And an Ottawa Citizen article notes the close relationship between Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray and Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher. Such a deal between the two teams, the article says, could include prospects James Sheppard Tyler Cuma plus a draft pick. The author, Allen Panzeri, also questions the interest by the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, though he does list some pieces that could be exchanged if a deal were to go down.

Sun Media’s Bruce Garrioch has some interesting notes in today’s column, including:

  • The Detroit Red Wings have allegedly made a big, long-term offer to Marian Hossa, and are hoping to know his decision by July 1.
  • The Florida Panthers hoping to land a first-round draft choice and prospect for the rights to negotiate exclusively with Jay Bouwmeester. The Flyers, Oilers, Stars, Canucks and Senators are in the mix.
  • Scott Niedermayer is still planning to let the Ducks know about his intentions to return prior to Friday’s draft. The clock is ticking …

Couple articles today about the Edmonton Oilers worth sharing. The first (click here) says the team isn’t in the mix for Dany Heatley. The second article (click here) notes that the team would like to engage in discussions with the agents for Ales Kotalik and Dwayne Roloson prior to the July 1 opening of free agency.

The Edmonton Oilers aren’t likely to go after Jay Bouwmeester, according to the Edmonton Journal. Writer Jim Matheson says the options for the talented defenseman could include Vancouver, which is dealing with the Sedin twin situation; Dallas; or the Philadelphia Flyers, but they’d need to move somebody (Briere?).

In other Oilers news, matheson says there’s a less than 50 percent chance the team re-signs goalie Dwayne Roloson. He says the team does want to bring back d-man Jason Strudwick, who’s also a UFA.

The Hockey News’ Ryan Dixon has some interesting news and notes in today’s column. Here are a few highlights:

  • He feels that Marian Hossa is likely to re-sign with the Detroit Red Wings, but he wonders what would happen if the Pittsburgh Penguins came calling again.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash and Atlanta Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk are both scheduled to be UFAs in 2010. Dixon thinks they’ll both enter next season without having signed extentions, and thus could be the subject of trade rumors over the next year.
  • Dany Heatley isn’t the only big name scorer who could be on the move this summer; don’t forget about the Wild’s Marian Gaborik
  • Dixon tells Edmonton Oilers fans that he’d be more comfortable signing goalie Dwayne Roloson over Nikolai Khabibulin, despite the four-year age difference. Roloson, who turns 40 in a few months, keeps himself in great shape and Khabibulin is more injury prone, he notes. Of course, it’s only pretent money, he says.

According to The Canadian Press and Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray and coach Corey Clouston were “shocked” and “devastated,” respectively, by the news that Dany Heatley wants to be traded. Murray says he’s talked to several teams, but doesn’t know when to expect a move. He also admits it will be hard to replace Heatley’s scoring ability.

Where do you think Heatley will end up? There has been some chatter about Edmonton, but what about other teams?

The Ottawa Sun just posted an article, noting that there will be no shortage of teams interested in Dany Heatley. The article lists the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadians, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins as teams that may test the trade waters. The article also notes that Heatley has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and that may play into where he ends up.
