Allan Muir, of Sports Illustrateds’ Inside the NHL blog, has some interesting notes in a piece posted online this weekend (click here). Among them, he lists nine teams interested in Sergei Zubov and he also explains why the talented defenseman has yet to be signed.

Muir also notes that the San Jose Sharks would love to move winger Jonathan Cheechoo, and he says the former 56-goal scorer could be a nice reclamation project for certain teams. Additional notes focus on winger Alex Tanguay, St. Louis Blues prospects, the goaltending situation in Dallas and a few other topics.  A nice, quick read.

Defenseman Jay McKee, known for his shot-blocking and recent injury woes, was bought out today by the St. Louis Blues. The Blues also announced some minor re-signings. Check here for details.

You’ve probably heard the news already about the Florida Panthers trading defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to the Calgary Flames earlier today for defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third-round pick (67th overall) in this year’s draft.

The next question become: Will Bouwmeester sign with the Flames? They have exclusive negotiating rights until July 1. We saw this type of move backfire last year, when the Montreal Canadians aquired the rights to Mats Sundin but failed to get a deal done. However the Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues had success going this route in recent years.

Lots’ of news about Dany Heatley today.

Sun Media reports that the Ottawa Senators are asking for two players plus a draft pick (likely a first-rounder) in exchange for Heatley. The team would also like to make the deal before July 1, when Heatley is due a $4 million signing bonus. The article notes that the Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars are leading the Heatley sweepstakes, though the St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers also are interested.

Another Sun Media report looks at some of the players who could be involved in discussions, ranging from Kings winger Alexander Frolov and defenceman Jack Johnson to Wild center James Sheppard, defenseman Tyler Cuma and winger Cal Clutterbuck.

And an Ottawa Citizen article notes the close relationship between Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray and Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher. Such a deal between the two teams, the article says, could include prospects James Sheppard Tyler Cuma plus a draft pick. The author, Allen Panzeri, also questions the interest by the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, though he does list some pieces that could be exchanged if a deal were to go down.

Was backing out of the driveway on the way to see a movie when I heard the Keith Tkachuk re-signing was announced. It’s a one-year, $2.15 million deal for the St. Louis Blues.

STLtoday columnist Jeff Gordon talked to Blues GM Larry Pleau this afternoon, and Pleau says the team is interested in adding a puck-moving defenseman and a backup goalie. Gordon lays out some possible moves the Blues could make, whether by trades or through minor league depth.

Keith Tkachuk has received a contract offer from the St. Louis Blues, according to a report by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jeremy Rutherford. He says to expect an agreement as early as today (June 18). Tkachuk is quoted as saying, “I don’t want to get into it until it’s finally done … We’ll know more today. We’re working on something right now.”

At 37, Tkachuk isn’t the top-line guy he was a decade ago. However, he would continue to give the young St. Louis Blues a veteran presence with some scoring touch (he did have 25 goals last season).

Mike Danton, the former St. Louis Blues forward who tried to arrange the murder of his agent, could be released from prison in two months. There’s no way any team would sign this guy, would they?

The Ottawa Sun just posted an article, noting that there will be no shortage of teams interested in Dany Heatley. The article lists the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadians, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins as teams that may test the trade waters. The article also notes that Heatley has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and that may play into where he ends up.

STLToday.com columnist Jeff Gordon muses about the NHL off season. It’s a pretty good summary of what to expect in the coming weeks. He does list an interesting note that I haven’t come across yet. He says the Tampa Bay Lightening would be willing to move Ryan Malone to any team willing to pick up the remainder of his salary. To sweeten the pot, the Lightning could throw in the No. 2 overall pick in this summer’s draft. Seems a bit much to me. He suggests the Blues look into the option. What do you think?
