Lot’s of NHL news today. Here are a few recent highlights:
- The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forwards Bill Guerin and Craig Adams
- The Edmonton Oilers have made an offer of about $3 million to re-sign goalie Dwayne Roloson, who has until Wednesday morning to make a decision.
- Goalie Eddie “The Eagle” Belfour, at age 44, is looking to return to the NHL next season.
- The Carolina Hurricanes have locked up forward Jussi Jokinen to a two-year deal that will pay him $1.5 million next season and $1.9 million in 2010-11.
- Goalie Peter Budaj has re-signed with the Colorado Avalanche, on a one-year, $1.25 million contract.
Sun Media’s Bruce Garrioch says that Philadelphia Flyers center Daniel Briere could be “plan B” for the Montreal Canadians, should they not be able to acquire the Lighting’s Vincent Lacavalier. The Flyers shopped Briere around during the draft, but didn’t receive much interest. The team is also trying to move wingerSimon Gagne.
Garrioch has a couple other notes in his column. To me, the most interesting were learning that the Flyers inquired about San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov, but the Flyers would need to move out a big contract first or in that deal. Also, the Pittsburg Penguins are expected to re-sign winger Bill Guerin before the start of free agency.
The Pittsburgh-Post Tribune says the Pittsburgh Penguins would like to re-sign Rob Scuderi, but the defenseman will be looking to earn about $2.5 million per season, making it a tough fit. Other UFAs for Pittsburgh include forwards Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Petr Sykora, Miroslav Satan, Mike Zigomanis and Craig Adams, defensemen Phillpe Boucher and Hal Gill and goalie Mathieu Garon.
Besides Scuderi, the team may attempt to re-sign Guerin, Fedotenko and Zigomanis, and possibly Adams, according to the article.
As I mentioned on this blog before, I think the team could use a dynamic skater/scorer to line up alongside Sidney Crosby. Guerin seemed to fill in adequately, but appeared slow to join the rush (and get back) at times during the team’s Stanley Cup run.
The Hockey News’ Ryan Dixon has some interesting news and notes in today’s column. Here are a few highlights:
- He feels that Marian Hossa is likely to re-sign with the Detroit Red Wings, but he wonders what would happen if the Pittsburgh Penguins came calling again.
- Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash and Atlanta Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk are both scheduled to be UFAs in 2010. Dixon thinks they’ll both enter next season without having signed extentions, and thus could be the subject of trade rumors over the next year.
- Dany Heatley isn’t the only big name scorer who could be on the move this summer; don’t forget about the Wild’s Marian Gaborik
- Dixon tells Edmonton Oilers fans that he’d be more comfortable signing goalie Dwayne Roloson over Nikolai Khabibulin, despite the four-year age difference. Roloson, who turns 40 in a few months, keeps himself in great shape and Khabibulin is more injury prone, he notes. Of course, it’s only pretent money, he says.
The New York Time’s Slap Shot blog looks at the Pittsburgh Penguins 10 pending unrestricted free agents, including winger Bill Guerin and game six hero defenseman Rob Scuderi. The blog post also mentions the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators as teams that have found out that “expensive, long-term deals that don’t work out for the club and/or player can damage a team’s ability to turn itself around under the salary cap.”
In his weekly Q&A with readers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Dave Molinari says the Penguins aren’t likely to spend big on wingers to play alongside Malkin and Crosby, despite the team most likely losing Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko and Petr Sykora to free agency. He also cracks that only a “sucker” would take Marc-Andre Fleury via trade. And even so, it would be hard to find an equal netminder to play between the pipes for Pittsburgh.
Who do you think the Penguins should target to man the wings on the team’s top two lines? Any potential bargains out there who would be good fits?
The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garroich has some interesting notes in a column posted earlier this week. He says:
- Chicago’s Martin Havlat would be an ideal linemate for Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby
- Minnesota is trying to resign Marian Gaborik, but he could end up signing elsewhere, like with the Los Angeles Kings
- Phil Kessel and the Bruins are far apart on contract negotiations; he could be traded
- The Kings, Canadians and Leafs all could make a pitch for Ducks UFA defenseman Francois Beauchemin
