The off-season remains in a lull. Here are a few recent rumor stories circulating among reporters:
- Brendan Shanahan looks like he’s going to sign with either the New Jersey Devils or New York Rangers. Read about it by clicking here.
- According to the Dallas Morning News, defenseman Sergei Zubov isn’t likely to return to the Dallas Stars.
- Alex Tanguay’s agent confirms that the Florida Panthers are one of about six teams looking to sign the UFA winger. Read the Florida Sun Sentinel article by clicking here. According to the article, other teams that could be in the mix include the Coyotes, Oilers, Islanders, Senators and Stars.
Here are some of the best rumor headlines from this morning:
- The Dallas Morning News’ Mike Heika has some notes about Sergei Zubov and Brad Richards.
- Fire & Ice looks into possible interest in Zubov by the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers. The blog also says there’s nothing new to report about Brendan Shanahan.
- Red Wings beat writer Ansar Khan says the team has unanticipated spending money due to the departures of players like Marian Hossa, Jiri Hudler, Mikael Samuelsson and Tomas Kopecky. He says the team should spend the money to get better players in the lineup. He breaks down some of the available UFA options. It’s a good read.
- Tim Sassone, of the Daily Herald, says the Toronto Maple Leafs, with some extra d-men, and the Chicago Blackhawks, with an abundance of forwards, could match up on a trade. He says there are whispers that the team’s GMs have been having discussions.
Here are some of this mornings big NHL stories:
- The New Jersey Devils have re-signed defenseman Johnny Oduya.
- Erik Cole will not sign a new contract with the Carolina Hurricanes before the deadline and will test the free-agent market.
- Nashville forward Steve Sullivan would likely have to take less money if he opts to re-sign with the Predators rather than pursue a contract on the open market.
- The Boston Bruins have placed forward Peter Schaefer on unconditional waivers, which means he’ll likely be bought out of his contract.
- Defenseman Rob Blake has agreed to a one-year contract to remain with the San Jose Sharks.
- Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson says he will wait until after July 1 to make his decision.
On the Islanders Beat looks at UFAs who could serve as the potential backup goalie for the New York Islanders next season. Author Greg Logan’s top choice: Florida’s Craig Anderson.
Who do you see as the best backup goalie on this year’s free agent market? I’ve heard some talk about New Jersey’s Scott Clemmensen.
New Jersey Devils forward Brian Gionta will become a UFA, though he’d like to stick with the Devils and the team wants him back, too.
Steve Bartlett, Gionta’s agent, tells the Fire & Ice blog, “There certainly is mutual interest and respect from both parties to get something done, but also an acknowledgement that that might not be possible to do so before July 1 for a lot of reasons.”
After a monster season a few years ago, Gionta has settled into a 20- to 30-goal scorer. Where do you think he could land, if not re-signed by the Devils?
Need to post quickly, so here’s a rundown of some of today’s most interesting NHL rumors:
- The Star-Ledger - Brian Gionta wants to return to New Jersey Devils
- The Detroit News – Chris Chelios still wants to play, but it won’t be with the Red Wings
- The Tampa Tribune – Ownership squabbling clouds the future for the Tampa Bay Lightning
- USA Today – Vinny Lecavalier won’t likely be dealt this weekend
- Sun Media – Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild likely are leaders in Dany Heatley sweepstakes
- South Florida Sun-Sentinel – Florida Panthers working to deal negotiating rights to Jay Bouwmeester
There are no talks scheduled between center John Madden and the New Jersey Devils, though the defense-first specialist is open to further discussions. That’s according to The Star-Ledger. What do you think he’s worth? Bear in mind that he’s now 36 years old. I could see maybe a two-year deal at $2 million per. But where, I’m not sure.
Fire & Ice, a New Jersey Devils blog, talks to pending UFA wingers Mike Rupp and Brian Gionta about their expectations heading into free agency. Read the details here.
