The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Empty Netters blog looks at teams that UFA goaltender Martin Biron could help. The writer finds it curious that Biron has attracted such little interest so far. He feels the Thrashers, Kings, Coyotes and Lighting would be the best fits.
What do you think? Why haven’t teams gone after Biron?
TSN reports that the Colorado Avalanche have traded winger Ryan Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings for defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing, plus a fifth-round pick.
It’s been long rumored the Kings would be trying to secure a high-scoring forward. However, I’m not sure this is the answer. Smyth carries a $6 million-plus salary cap hit and scored just 26 goals last season and 14 the year before. I’ve enjoyed watching him play for a long time, but I wouldn’t expect him to provide much of a boost to the Kings’ offense. However, I would gladly eat my words to see him recapture the touch he showed from his Oilers years.
What does everybody else think of this deal?
Daniel and Henrik Sedin appear to be headed to the open market, with no progress made with the Vancouver Canucks. Sun Media’s Mike Zeisberger believes there could be a bidding war between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens for the twins. He also thinks that Minnesota Wild and Los Angeles Kings could get in on the bidding.
Where do you think they’ll end up? Do you think a team will meet their demans for 12-year deals worth $63 million each?
Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray was “disgusted” with the New York Rangers’ offer of Michael Roszival and Nikolai Zherdev for Dany Heatley, according to Bruce Garrioch.
The article also says the Los Angeles Kings are no longer pursuing Heatley. The teams remaining in the hunt are the Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks. If the Senators would consider taking back defenseman Brian Campbell, the Chicago Blackhawks would jump into the mix.
Lots’ of news about Dany Heatley today.
Sun Media reports that the Ottawa Senators are asking for two players plus a draft pick (likely a first-rounder) in exchange for Heatley. The team would also like to make the deal before July 1, when Heatley is due a $4 million signing bonus. The article notes that the Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars are leading the Heatley sweepstakes, though the St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers also are interested.
Another Sun Media report looks at some of the players who could be involved in discussions, ranging from Kings winger Alexander Frolov and defenceman Jack Johnson to Wild center James Sheppard, defenseman Tyler Cuma and winger Cal Clutterbuck.
And an Ottawa Citizen article notes the close relationship between Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray and Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher. Such a deal between the two teams, the article says, could include prospects James Sheppard Tyler Cuma plus a draft pick. The author, Allen Panzeri, also questions the interest by the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, though he does list some pieces that could be exchanged if a deal were to go down.
Need to post quickly, so here’s a rundown of some of today’s most interesting NHL rumors:
- The Star-Ledger - Brian Gionta wants to return to New Jersey Devils
- The Detroit News – Chris Chelios still wants to play, but it won’t be with the Red Wings
- The Tampa Tribune – Ownership squabbling clouds the future for the Tampa Bay Lightning
- USA Today – Vinny Lecavalier won’t likely be dealt this weekend
- Sun Media – Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild likely are leaders in Dany Heatley sweepstakes
- South Florida Sun-Sentinel – Florida Panthers working to deal negotiating rights to Jay Bouwmeester
Dany Heatley has given the Ottawa Senators a list of nine teams to which he’d waive his no-trade clause, however, GM Bryan Murray is taking offers from all teams, according to ESPN’s Pierre LaBrun. Murray says he definitely wants to move the winger by July 1 to avoid paying Heatley a $4 million roster bonus. However, Murray downplays talk that the team is trying to move Heatley prior to this Friday’s entry draft.
LaBrun lists these teams as interested in Heatley: Los Angeles, Minnesota, Edmonton and the New York Rangers; he expects more teams to get in on the talks.
Sun Media reports that the teams on Heatley’s list include: Los Angeles, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins. Wonder who the other two teams are?
Where do you think Heatley will end up? When do you see a trade going down?
The Boston Globe’s Kevin Paul Dupont looks at the Dany Heatley situation, providing his thoughts on what could go down. He cites a GM who thinks the Ottawa situation is more complicated because the team already was trying to move Jason Spezza before Heatley’s trade demand.
Dupont says the Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadians and Vancouver Canucks have the cap space to add Heatley. Dupont says the Senators could target the Kings, though they won’t likly pry center Anze Kopitar. However, a package from the Kings could include winger Dustin Brown and defenseman Matt Greene. A deal with Vancouver could net Ottawa Ryan Kesler and Kevin Bieksa, and there wouldn’t be much to pick from with the Canadians, Dupont notes.
USA Today NHL beat writer Kevin Allen doesn’t think the Ottawa Senators will receive fair trade value for winger Dany Heatley. He says that too many teams are trying to shed salary – not add the $7.5 million cap hit that Heatley would bring with him to a new team. Allen lists these teams as those he believes will be looking to move high-salary players: the Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, Ottawa, Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Allen notes that the Montreal Canadians are one of the few teams with money to spend, especially if they do not re-sign UFAs Saku Koivu, Mathieu Schneider, Alex Tanguay, Mike Komisarek and Alexei Kovalev. He also says the Los Angeles Kings could be looking to add some punch up front. However, he doesn’t see a reason why the Kings would trade players for Heatley when they could just sign a UFA such as Martin Havlat, Marian Gaborik, Marian Hossa, Jay Bouwmeester or Mike Komisarek.
Allen’s logic makes a lot of sense. The fact, too, that Heatley will only go to certain teams (due to his no trade clause) will also hurt Ottawa’s chances of receiving fair value. This is a story that surely won’t go a way for a while.
Instead of writing about rumors, USA Today NHL beat writer Kevin Allen writes about what he thinks WILL NOT happen this off season. He thinks the Sedin twins WILL NOT leave the Vancouver Canucks, Jack Johnson WILL NOT stay with the Los Angeles Kings, Jay Bouwmeester WILL NOT end up in the Western Conference and Alexander Radulov WILL NOT return to the Nashville Predators. Interesting take. Read it here.
