Kind of a slow couple of days on the NHL rumor front. Not the most exciting of news, but here are a couple items worth sharing:
- Puck-rakers suggests that left winger Jason Chimera could be on the trading block. The writer says Chimera was offered by the Columbus Blue Jackets to San Jose for defenseman Christian Ehrhoff earlier this off-season.
- Canes Now reports that the Carolina Hurricanes are in discussions about re-signing UFA defenseman Dennis Seidenberg.

ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun’s most recent article focuses heavily on the Ducks’ signing of Saku Koivu. However, if you keep reading, there is some discussion regarding Sergei Zubov. LeBrun says that Zubov is being considred by as many as six or seven teams, possibly including the New York Rangers.
LeBrun also says that the Carolina Hurricanes are not close to a contract with RFA Anton Babchuk (the defenseman quietly netted 16 goals last season – I’m surprised, to be honest). The stalemate may lead the team to seek a trade of the 25-year-old.
Here are some of this mornings big NHL stories:
- The New Jersey Devils have re-signed defenseman Johnny Oduya.
- Erik Cole will not sign a new contract with the Carolina Hurricanes before the deadline and will test the free-agent market.
- Nashville forward Steve Sullivan would likely have to take less money if he opts to re-sign with the Predators rather than pursue a contract on the open market.
- The Boston Bruins have placed forward Peter Schaefer on unconditional waivers, which means he’ll likely be bought out of his contract.
- Defenseman Rob Blake has agreed to a one-year contract to remain with the San Jose Sharks.
- Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson says he will wait until after July 1 to make his decision.
Lot’s of NHL news today. Here are a few recent highlights:
- The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forwards Bill Guerin and Craig Adams
- The Edmonton Oilers have made an offer of about $3 million to re-sign goalie Dwayne Roloson, who has until Wednesday morning to make a decision.
- Goalie Eddie “The Eagle” Belfour, at age 44, is looking to return to the NHL next season.
- The Carolina Hurricanes have locked up forward Jussi Jokinen to a two-year deal that will pay him $1.5 million next season and $1.9 million in 2010-11.
- Goalie Peter Budaj has re-signed with the Colorado Avalanche, on a one-year, $1.25 million contract.
The News & Observer’s Chip Alexander takes a thorough look at the Carolina Hurricanes’ off season game plan. Forwards Chad LaRose, Erik Cole and Ryan Bayda, and defenseman Dennis Seidenberg are UFAs. Forwards Tuomo Ruutu and Jussi Jokinen, and defenseman Anton Babchuk are RFAs. GM Jim Rutherford says he has to plan this off season while also looking ahead to next year — when goalie Cam Ward will be a RFA.
